Vision
The project “Passing Places” aims to capture the personal narratives of displaced youth across Israel following the events of October 7th, providing them with a platform to express their experiences through photography. By documenting their journey of displacement and the search for a sense of ‘home,’ the project seeks to foster understanding, resilience, and creativity amidst the ongoing conflict, offering a fresh perspective on the realities faced by these young individuals.
Activity
“Passing Places,” led by photographer Yael Hotomlansky, is a photography project that emerged directly in response to the mass displacements following October 7th. The project involved youth aged 13-22 who were evacuated from Kiryat Shmona, Kibbutz Re’im, and the Eshkol region to locations such as Netanya, Tel Aviv, and Ein Yahav. With initial support and collaboration from the Tel-Aviv International Student Film Festival (TISFF), the project provided each participant with an analog camera for a week, allowing them to document their experiences of displacement through their own lenses. The photographs were exhibited at the ‘Home IS Not Here’ exhibition during the 26th edition of TISFF, reaching a wide audience
The images in the exhibition are captured entirely by the youth, offering a raw and authentic perspective of their lives during this period. Each student was encouraged to explore the theme of ‘home’ through their photography, questioning what home means to them—whether it’s tied to places, people, activities, or emotions. The resulting exhibition presents a unique narrative that highlights the creativity, resilience, and hope of these young individuals as they navigate the complexities of displacement.
