Haim Shiran

Born in Meknes Morocco, Haim Shiran studied theater and television in Paris, where he won the prize for best dramatic actor in 1961 at the Conservatoire National d’Art Dramatique and acted for one year at the Comédie Francaise. In addition, he worked as an assistant director at the French television for two years. With his immigration to Israel in 1965, Shiran became one of the founders of the Israel Educational Television, where he worked until 1996 as the senior producer-director as well as programming manager. Among the hundreds of shows and films that Haim Shiran directed is the children’s dramatic series “Hayeladim Mischunat Haim (Children from the Neighborhood of Life)” – 1974-1978, one of the most critically acclaimed children’s series that has ever been aired on Israeli television. Shiran’s films have been screened at various festivals world wide. Shiran won many awards for his films and a special award from Unesco for his film “Pillar of Salt”. Shiran is one of the founders of the Community Theatre in Israel and helped to create the Faculty of Community Television at Tel Aviv University. He taught theatre at Beit Zvi and at Nisan Nativ Studio in addition to direction/stage management at Tel Aviv University and at Negev College. For twenty years Shiran worked with the Ethiopians Jews in teaching and creating programs with them for the Israeli TV. Between 1986-1989, Haim Shiran lived in New York, where he undertook several projects. Haim Shiran initiated Sephardic-Jewish film festivals that were held in New York in 1989 at the Jewish Museum. Moreover, he aired his films on Sephardic Jews in several locations in the United States and at several Jewish community centers as well as lectured at prominent universities such as Yale, Harvard, New York University, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan. On March 1996, Haim Shiran was nommed Manager and Artistique Director of Israel’s Inbal Dance Theater, establishing the Ethnic Arts Center, Inbal. In 2007, Haim Shiran left Inbal in order to pursue the artistic direction of the professional Ethiopian dance company “Takesha” based in the north of Israel. He has recently been appointed to the governing council of the Habima National Theater. Lastly, thanks to grant from the Matanel Foundation, Shiran directed two films “Bagdad Jerusalem and Fès” with Yair Dallal and “Rabbi Stansaltz in Fès”.
