Vision

Stéphane Mandelbaum, created an oeuvre deeply haunted by the Shoah, Jewish heritage, and intergenerational trauma. The film ensures that this memory is preserved and transmitted to future generations. Through his provocative portraits of Jews and Nazis, Mandelbaum confronted antisemitic stereotypes and the violence of history, opening a necessary dialogue for today’s society.

Activity

“The Mandelbaum Mystery” documentary explores the life and murder of Stéphane Mandelbaum, a Brussels-born painter of Jewish descent, a precocious genius, and an elusive figure. Murdered at 25, in 1986, his fate intersects with the theft of a Modigliani and the shadows of 1980s Europe. The film unfolds as a double investigation: criminal (who ordered his killing?) and psychological (who was Mandelbaum really?). A tormented artist, Mandelbaum was deeply haunted by the Shoah and the weight of Jewish memory. Through provocative drawings of Jews and Nazis, portraits of exiles and outcasts, he confronted antisemitism, trauma, and the contradictions of identity.
