Jews From Elsewhere: Forgotten Diasporas, Singular Jewish Identities

Vision

Not all Jews are Ashkenazi or Sephardic ! There exist numerous unknown Jewish communities that do not fit this binary model and are not well known.

Activity

The work will feature contributions from 36 academic scholars around the world. Every one of them is among the foremost specialists of its field and knows those communities first hand. About 45 communities are described, covering six geographical areas: Muslim world, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central Asia, Latin America, India and China, resulting in a 500-page book.

There is simply nothing equivalent in English.

Dr Edith Bruder

Dr Edith Bruder is a French Anthropologist with a multidisciplinary education. She is a Research Associate at the French National Center for Scientific Research, at UNISA- University of South Africa, and Senior Research Fellow at ISGAP, New York. She is the founding President of the International Society for the Study of African Jewry (www.issaj. com).

She is the author of various scientific articles and books such as The Black Jews of Africa, History, Identity, Religion (Oxford University Press, 2008 and 2012); Black Jews, Les Juifs noirs d’Afrique et le mythe des Tribus perdues (Albin Michel 2014); Juifs d’ailleurs. Diasporas oubliées, identités singulières (Albin Michel 2020) whose translation Jews from Elsewhere is published by OUP (2025) ; Hisoire des relations entre les Juifs et les Noirs- De la Bible à Black Lives Matter.
