Understanding emotions - Conference in Jerusalem, October 24th 9:30 local time
  The emotions are an integral part of our daily lives and yet they often remain a mystery.
Seven world famous women scientists reveal the secrets of what could be considered a neuro tool box in a host of different situations, from basic survival to the social pleasure of taking and sharing a selfie.
A full immersion into the world of emotions, where there will be space to discuss one of the most controversial, fear, as well as the strong reciprocal relationship between emotions and learning, and to explore disorders stemming from how we manage our emotions and how we understand those of others.
The BrainForum will take place at the Isaac and Luba Becker Auditorium, Goodman Building, Edmond J. Safra Campus of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and is organised in collaboration with the ELSC- Edmond and Lily Center for Brain Sciences and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
It will be possible to participate in presence of the Jerusalem meeting, according to the restrictions for COVID-19.
In order to attend this event you will need to present a valid green pass or recovery certificate or a negative Covid test from the last 24 hours.

Une petite flamme qui grandit par le Rav Adin Éven-Israël (Steinsaltz) ע"ה

Je m’efforce d’être ce que l’on pourrait appeler une source de contamination. Je ne dis pourtant pas par-là que d’autres doivent agir comme moi Je souhaite au contraire qu’ils oeuvrent encore mieux que moi Et tout particulièrement, qu’ils agissent autrement. Peut-être alors quelque chose se passera-t-il… Quel est mon désir, que voudrais-je qu’il subsiste après moi, à titre d’héritage ? Des sermons ? Le vent les emportera. Des livres ? Le vent les consumera. Peut-être ai-je réussi à toucher quelques individus J’essaie en tout cas en permanence que ma propre bougie flamboie J’essaie de faire en sorte de garder le feu attisé Et j’essaie d’embraser les autres. J’ose espérer qu’ici et là, au gré de mon chemin J’ai pu toucher quelques bougies et qu’elles se soient allumées. Oui, qu’elles demeurent allumées. Il est possible que je ne sois qu’une petite bougie Comme cela, toute pâle Et qu’il y en ait d’autres éclatantes et toutes brillantes, Hautes et réussies Au contraire, au contraire Pourvu, pourvu qu’il en soit ainsi. Que reste-t-il donc dans la mémoire ? Disons, dans mes gènes. Si survenait un écroulement dévastateur, Poursuivons néanmoins la ligne Continuons la chaîne Aidons-la à grandir À perdurer. Congratulations to Ami Bouganim, for the book dedicated to his magistral work - AMI BOUGANIM Voix marocaine en Israël - Sous la direction de Najib Redouane et Yvette Bénayoun-Szmidt L'oeuvre magistrale d'Ami Bouganim a fait de lui l'un des écrivains sépharades les plus renommés tant il a su si bien retracer le déracinement de la communauté juive marocaine qui a fait son alya dans les années 50 et 60. Les études composant ce recueil visent à illustrer la particularité de cet écrivain qui se distingue par une production riche et variée, à la fois philosophique et littéraire, autour de thèmes variés qui analysent les désillusions de l'exil, la dignité humaine, la culture spécifique dont est porteuse sa communauté, en accordant à Mogador une dimension mythique. À la fois chantre du passé et intellectuel du présent il est aussi éveilleur de conscience pour dénoncer et exprimer les maux dont souffre la société israélienne.

Musrara Mix International Art and Music Festival returns for the 20th year! This year the festival will be held in a special online edition, with a rich multidisciplinary program of artists and musicians from Israel and the world that will be presented on a dedicated website. The festival will run for three days (between the dates 15-17.12.2020) and will present a multidisciplinary program that will combine video performances, video art, recorded performances and audio-visual works. In addition, there will be an international student film competition and there will be panels with curators and artists with the participation of the audience. The works will open daily at a specified time for 24 hours. Rabbi Adin Even Israel Steinsaltz zal is known for his monumental work of translating, compiling and interpreting the Talmud. He follows this line of commentators who mark a turning point in the understanding of the texts of the tradition. One will no longer read the Bible or the Talmud without inquiring into the "comments of Steinsaltz". He was - he will remain - the interpreter called for by this unhappy and happy turning point in our history, combining science with the Torah, "the intelligence of the heart" with "the sobriety of the spirit", clairvoyance with piety in the service of G. For us, Rabbi Steinsaltz was the spirit of the Matanel Foundation. It was he who inspired us, guided us, instructed us, supported us. It was he who conceived the notion of "Foundation incubator", presiding with his presence the reunion of the carriers and directors of the programs. His remarks, always lucid and luminous, echoed on everyone's humanitarian chords. It is the entire "Matanel family" made up of its craftsmen, its leaders and its activists that his death plunges into a disarray of mourning and a sea of ​​gratitude. His teachings, his advice - conveyed, here and there, in memories and parable-narratives in the best of Hasidic traditions - and his beautiful gestures, smiling and generous, will continue to guide us on the philanthropic path that he had drawn for the Matanel Foundation. Le rabbin Adin Even Israël Steinsaltz zal est connu pour son œuvre monumentale de traduction, de compilation et d’interprétation du Talmud. Il s’inscrit dans cette lignée de commentateurs qui impriment un tournant à la compréhension des textes de la tradition. On ne lira plus la Bible ou le Talmud sans s’enquérir des « commentaires de Steinsaltz ». Il était – il restera – l’interprète que réclamait cette charnière malheureuse et heureuse de notre histoire, alliant la science à la Torah, « l’intelligence du cœur » à « la sobriété de l’esprit », la clairvoyance à la piété dans le service de D. Pour nous, le rabbin Steinsaltz était l’esprit de la Fondation Matanel. C’était lui qui nous inspirait, nous guidait, nous instruisait, nous soutenait. C’est lui qui conçut la notion de « Fondation couveuse », présidant de sa présence les retrouvailles des porteurs et réalisateurs des programmes. Ses remarques, toujours lucides et lumineuses, résonnaient sur les cordes humanitaires de chacun. C’est toute « la famille Matanel » composée de ses artisans, de ses animateurs et de ses activistes que son décès plonge dans un désarroi de deuil et dans une mer de gratitude. Ses enseignements, ses conseils – véhiculés, par-ci par-là, dans des souvenirs et des récits-paraboles dans la meilleure des traditions hassidiques – et ses beaux gestes, souriants et généreux, continueront de nous guider sur la voie philanthropique qu’il avait tracée pour la Fondation Matanel. Que le Ciel soit de consolation pour ses proches, ses disciples et tous ceux qui vivent sa perte comme celle d’un Maître qui nous laisse une bibliothèque de livres, de commentaires et d’enseignements. Que sa mémoire soit bénie.

The exhibition will be open to the public for two weeks between 23.7-6.8 (hours: 10:00-19:00) Musrara Garduate/Thesis Exhibition presents the works of students graduating from the Photography, New Media Art, Visual Communication, New Music and Advanced studies – Experimental Music and Sound Art departments. In their final year, each student proposes a site-specific project, and works on his personal project with the guidance of heads of departments and other lecturers through simulations, tests, and mid-year presentations. Towards the appointed hour, the school on its different classes is transformed into a diverse display complex. The exhibition brings together the different departments with works created on the intersection of art and technology, photographs, various visual pieces, books, site specific photo and video installations, performance, and sound installations.

Fondation Jeunes Scientifiques Luxembourg ISSI: Camilla Hurst represents Luxembourg in Israel August 30, 2019 by FJSL REPRESENTING THE JONK FUERSCHER IN ISRAEL! For the very first time this year, the Foundation Jeunes Scientifiques Luxembourg (FJSL) – with the precious support of the Foundation Matanel – was able to send a laureate of the national contest “Jonk Fuerscher” to the International Summer Science Institute (ISSI) in Israel. During this year’s contest “Jonk Fuerscher” Camilla Hurst, student of the University of Oxford, won this prestigious award. Camilla has had a prolific past with the FJSL:at the age of only 18, she has already won prizes at four national contests in addition to the 4thprize in her category at the 2017 International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles. Her new project in engineering: "The Wheelchair Accessibility Belt (WAB)” is a prototype of a complimentary device, which can manufactured at low cost and easily be attached to the wheel independently by the user to increase the traction between the wheelchair and the ground, thereby facilitating accessibility to the outdoors for wheelchair users. She states in her project, that the inclusion of disabled people in outdoor activities increases both their mental and physical health, which the WAB can facilitate and thus promote. A month-long program full of research, field trips and unforgettable experiences From July 2nd – 25th 2019, Camilla fully immersed into scientific research in the campus labs: during the first three weeks, she was paired up with young scientists from Australia, South Korea, and the United States for an experimental investigation of their common project. In addition to attending lectures by Weizmann Institute scientists, she conducted field research in the Judean Desert and the Negev, acquainting her with the unique ecological, geographical, geological, zoological, and archaeological characteristics of the area. The 18th of June , Joëlle Aflalo, president of the Matanel Foundation received the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Honorary Fellowship in recognition of her long and steadfast involvement in the University. She have been a prominent figure, leading with clear direction and a genuine plan for encouraging social change and justice, progress and equality in both Israel and Europe. Through the Matanel Foundation she has lead and supported many initiatives to strengthen pluralism and tolerance, promoting civic education and opportunities for humankind. She has chosen to support the Hebrew University by endeavoring to open its doors to people from all walks of life by funding scholarships for underprivileged students, and courses on the Zohar and Jewish philosophy as well as generously supporting brain research. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem bestows Honorary Fellowships upon a highly select group of esteemed individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, philanthropy and advocacy in support of Israel and the cause of higher education. Each year, Honorary Fellowship recipients are approved by The Hebrew University Faculty Senate and recognized at a ceremony in Israel during the annual International Board of Governors meeting in June.

11th Brain Circle Meeting in London in presence of Joëlle Aflalo, chairwoman of the Matanel Foundation This year, it focused on a futuristic topic: “Learning in Brains Minds and Machines”. Its seeds are already affecting our lives in a most dramatic way. In recent years we have understood several principles underlying learning from our own brain - the most amazing learning machine and used it to develop machines that learn, that change as a result of experience, that become “individual”.

On March 4th  Musrara hosted  a special award ceremony and an exhibition opening  in their Morel Drefler Gallery : the photo exhibition titled “à la fenêtre”  by the Institut Francais- Antenne Romain Gary- Jerusalem. This is  the outcome of a photo competition with an international jury comprised of distinguished members such as Dr. Nissan Perez and others (a project that has been running for years by the French Institute. the 1st prize of the Professional Competition went to the Photography Dept. Alumni and Artists Greenhouse student Mr. Uri Bareket.

CCME meeting "Moroccan Judaism: for a shared Moroccanity"

Joëlle Aflalo , chairwoman of the Matanel Foundation  attended the meeting "Moroccan Judaism: for a shared Moroccanity", organized by the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME) from November 13 to 18 2018 in Marrakech, under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI. The meeting, which brought together nearly 250 Moroccans belonging to the jewish religion, living in Morocco and abroad, aspired to praise Moroccan exception, and deepen the thinking on questions related to what being Moroccan means.

The aim of this meeting is to support Jewish and Muslim religious leaders in the review, sharing and learning from current good practice of inter-religious and inter-community dialogue and collaboration. When our Muslim and Jewish leaders take the lead, the communities will follow. Supported by KAICIID (King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue), the event was held on the 8th and the 9th of October 2018 in Amsterdam

Kaima Tanzania and Tevel b'tzedek Example of synergy between Matanel family members

The Matanel Foundation will support 2 new beautiful projects: Matanel Educational Farm in Tanzania, exporting Kaima spirit and Israeli’s knowhow internationally and Tevel ve-Tsedek Matanel Fellows that offers international volunteering opportunities in the developing world in Nepal and Africa.
