A zoom meeting was among the initiatives of Ofek Liyladenu to assist parents with the challenges war poses to the well-being of their young children who are blind or sight impaired. Parents, both fathers and mothers, were from all walks of life and locales across Israel. Among the issues discussed was the best way to prepare toddlers and kindergarten children for sirens and the need to reach the safe room as quickly and calmly as possible. The guidance included tips for practicing in advance, from allowing them to become familiar with the route to the safe room, and their own designated corner in the room, and the activities that would be most reassuring—from playing music and singing favorite songs to improvised play with household items, from using a straw to push a ball to stringing beads, with attention to textures and shapes of the items. The aim is to arouse curiosity, enhance sensory capacities, and provide a source of distraction. At the conclusion of the session, parents shared their appreciation for new insights they gained, and the opportunity to share their questions and issues during this challenging time.
Ironically, the session itself was interrupted by a siren.
