Dear Friends and Partners of the Matanel Foundation,
It is difficult to formulate greetings for this next Passover. To find words in order to express our comfort, encouragement, love. Everywhere, every hour, we are mourning the victims, praising the medical staff, supporting social activists. We will learn to formulate the questions bubbling beneath the surprise and anxiety and address them to smart and acute respondents.
These days, we are discovering our paucity and our vulnerability and waiting for our release. From lost lifestyles, patterns of thought and behavior, that may not return – from latent servitude behind work rhythms that denies us all leisure for wonder in front of the world and its fullness, the life and its transience.
We are not allowed to skip this Passover and while recounting the ten plagues we will wonder after the plague that landed on us, after its significance or its insignificance.
We have been blessed with life and freedom and it lays on each of us to think about how to use them to still enjoy better times and happier holidays. Giving again to those little liberties – traveling to work, shaking hands, hugging relatives – that shape the Freedom that has been made, unknowingly, into routine, their actual and true meaning and wishing for their return in the spirit of a united and authentic humanism.
Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, one of the greatest scholars of Judaism in our generation, who stands firmly at the crossroads of the various trends, made the Talmud accessible to Jews and non-Jews alike, Israel Prize laureate, has composed an universal prayer for these hard times for the humanity. קשה לנסח מילות ברכה לקראת החג. למצוא מילים שיביעו נחמה, עידוד, תודה. בכל מקום ובכל שעה, מתאבלים על הקורבנות, משבחים את הצוותים הרפואיים, עוקבים אחרי הפעילים החברתיים. עוד נלמד לנסח את השאלות המבעבעות מתחת לפני ההפתעה והחרדה ולהפנות אותן למשיבי דל.ל
בימים אלה, אנחנו מתגלים במלא עונינו ופגיעתנו ומחכים לשחרורנו. מאורחות חיים שאבד עליהן הכלח, מדפוסי מחשבה והתנהגות שלא ישובו עוד ואולי – מעבדות סמויה מאחורי קצבי עבודה שהשכיחו מאתנו כל פנאי לפליאה אל מול עולם ומלואו, חיים וארעיותם.ם
אנחנו לא רשאים לפסוח על פסח זה ובבואנו לקרוא על עשר המכות לא נוכל להימנע מלתהות אחרי המכה שנחתה עלנו, אחרי משמעותה או אי משמעותה.ה
אנחנו עוד נדע זמנים טובים יותר וחגים שמחים יותר. מייחלים לשובן של אותן חירויות קטנות – לנסוע לעבודה, להושיט יד לחבק קרובים –שמרכיבות יחד את אותו חופש שנעשה, ללא יודעין, לשגרה .ה
הרב עדין שטיינזץ, מגדולי חוקרי היהדות בדורנו, העומד איתן בצומת הזרמים השונים, שהנגיש את התלמוד ליהודים וללא יהודים כאחד, חתן פרס ישראל, חיבר תפילה אוניברסאלית בעת קשה זו לאנושות כולה. אנחנו רוצים לשתף אתכם : תפילה לעת צרה הרב עדין אבן ישׂראל שׁטיינזלץה
